Northwest Community Mental Health Affiliation

About Us

The Northwest Community Mental Health Affiliation is one of 18 organizations in Michigan which manage specialty services and supports for persons with severe mental illness, children and adolescents with serious emotional disturbance, persons with developmental disabilities, and substance abuse services for people enrolled in Medicaid. These types of organizations are called “Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans,” or PIHPs. The Michigan Department of Community Health contracts with a Community Mental Health Services Program (CMHSP) to serve as the Prepaid Inpatient Health Plan to manage services within specific geographic areas.

Depending on the number of Medicaid enrollees in the counties it services a CMHSP may be a “stand alone PIHP” or if the number of persons is below 20,000, CMHSPs may join together in an Affiliation. The Northwest CMH Affiliation includes two organizations: Northern Lakes CMH Authority (which holds the contract with the Michigan Department of Community Health and is also doing business as the Northwest CMH Affiliation to serve as the PIHP) and West Michigan CMH System. The geographic area of Northern Lakes CMH includes the six counties of Crawford, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Missaukee, Roscommon, and Wexford. The geographic area of West Michigan CMH System includes the three counties of Lake, Mason, and Oceana. Together, these nine counties make up the geographic area served by the Northwest CMH Affiliation.

The Northwest CMH Affiliation manages substance abuse services in the nine counties through a contract with Northern Michigan Substance Abuse Services.
